Abstract

TiO 2 pigment is treated with a polyalkylene glycol of formula where R is H or lower alkyl and may be the same or different in different parts of the molecule, and n is 2-4 e.g. di-, tri-, or tetraethylene, propylene-1,2, butylene-1,2 or 2,3, or isobutylene glycol. The amount used may be 0À1-2% by wt. of the dry pigment. It may be added in pure form or as an aqueous solution, either to the dry pigment during steam jet milling, or to an aqueous paste or suspension of the pigment which may then be spray dried or dried in an oven under normal or reduced pressure then jet-, roll-, or pin-milled. The TiO 2 may be precoated with oxides of Si and Al, Ti and Al, or Ti, Si, and Al, by treatment with water-glass, titanyl sulphate, and Al sulphate. The TiO 2 may be rutile or anatase and may be made by the sulphate or chloride process.
