Abstract

1,133,278. Modified titanium dioxide pigments. TITAN G.m.b.H. 26 April, 1967 [7 May, 1966], No. 19331/67. Heading C1A. A TiO 2 pigment is modified by treatment of an aqueous suspension with a salt of watersoluble alkanolamine and a hydroxycarboxylic acid, in which the alkanolamine contains no N-bonded residues having more than 5 carbon atoms and the acid has 5 or less carbon atoms in addition to carboxyl groups, has a solubility greater than 2% by weight in water at 20‹ C., and can possess one or more hydroxyl groups, the treated pigment being dried and jet-milled Individual salts or mixtures of salts may be used. Specified alkanolamine components of the salts are triethanolamine, butyldiethanolamine, triisopropanolamine and tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane, while specified acid components are lactic, citric, malic, tartaric and glycollic acids; triethanolammonium lactate is particularly suitable in the process, which may be applied to rutile and anatase pigments. In the process, alkanolamine salt, suitably in amount 0À1-1% based on the weight of pigment used, is added in the pure form or preferably dissolved in water or an organic solvent to an aqueous paste of the pigment. Drying, e.g. in a spray dryer, and grinding in a jet mill then take place. Preferably the TiO 2 pigment is pretreated with inorganic substances, e.g. oxides or hydrated oxides which may be precipitated on to the pigment from aqueous solutions of metal salts and/or silicates, e.g. from mixtures of water glass or titanyl sulphate with aluminium sulphate.
