Abstract

A process for coating TiO2 pigments with a hydrous oxide of titanium comprises leaching TiO2 particles with an aqueous acid, forming an aqueous dispersion of the TiO2 particles, adding a titanium tetrahalide to the dispersion, heating the mixture to between 80 DEG C. and the boiling point of the liquid and adjusting the pH to a value of 6 to 8, for example by the addition of an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate or NH4OH. The TiO2 particles are preferably of the rutile modification and have a mean particle size of 0.15 m to 0.35 m . Leaching may be effected with dilute H2SO4 at a pH of not more than 3 at a temperature of 60-90 DEG C. The particles may have other coatings in addition to the titanium oxide coating for example, a coating of an oxide of aluminium, zirconium, cerium, and/or silicon and/or a phosphate coating, which are preferably applied after the titanium oxide coating and the adjustment of the pH. Water-soluble hydrolysable salts of the desired metals, such as sulphates, chlorides, nitrates or acetates may be added to the suspension and the pH raised again to a value of 5 to 11.
