Abstract
1,093,387. Hot water supply systems. NORTH WESTERN GAS BOARD. April 22, 1966 [June 16, 1965], No. 25398/65. Heading F4A. A cold water storage cistern 1, is mounted above two insulated hot water tanks 2, 3. Cold water is supplied from the cistern to the bottom of the 15-gallon hot tank 2 by pipe 6 terminating in a spreader 7. A flow feed pipe 8 connects the top of the larger tank 2 to the bottom of the 5-gallon smaller tank 3. A flow pipe 9 from a boiler (not shown) leads to the top of the smaller tank 3 and a return pipe 10 to the boiler leads from the bottom of the smaller tank 3. The draw off pipe 11 leads from the top of smaller tank 3, which is equipped with a thermostat, and vent pipes 12, 13 lead from both tanks 3, 2 to the cistern 1. Normally only the small tank 3 is used for the supply of hot water, but when larger quantities are required, a valve 15 in line 14 connecting the larger tank 2 to the boiler return pipe 10, is opened to increase the capacity of the system. In an emergency, hot water may be drawn off directly from the larger tank 2 by opening valve 17 in line 16 connecting the tank 2 to the draw-off line 11. Valve 17 is preferably interlocked with valve 15 so that it may only be opened when the latter is closed.
