Abstract

1,092,831. Aerials. MARCONI CO. Ltd. Nov. 5, 1965 [Jan. 8, 1965], No. 940/65. Heading H4A. [Also in Division F2] A tubular structure, which may be used as a radome and support for an aerial system or, alternatively, may be adapted for use as a container, such as a double-walled pressure vessel, comprises an assembly of hollow cylindrical fibreglass members (1), Fig. 3 (not shown) each of trapezoidal cross-section, which when assembled together form a cylinder having in cross-section coaxial inner and outer walls with radial ribs between them formed by the side walls of adjacent members (1). The members (1) may be glued together by a suitable resinous adhesive and over the top of the assembly are wound glassfibre rovings 2, Fig. 1, which may be about 1/8 inch dia. and of which six placed side-by-side may be applied together. A resinous setting liquid is applied to the rovings either after winding or by running them through a bath as they are wound and curing is accelerated, for example, by infra-red heating. When the assembly is for use as an aerial system housing, it is arranged that its finished radial thickness is approximately one-quarter of the mean operating wavelength. Each member 1 has fibreglass inserts 5 fixed in its ends which house metal plugs 6 having tapped holes for receiving screws 7. Metal flange rings 3 or 4 are secured by means of the screws 7 to the ends of the assembly. Each flange ring 3 or 4 has an inner ring of holes such as (3B), Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) by means of which pairs of containers may be bolted together. A flange ring (3) has additionally an outer ring of holes (3A) by means of which a structure, or a plurality of bolted-together structures, may be bolted to a mast.
