Abstract

930,382. Aerials. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 13, 1960 [April 16, 1959], No. 13191/60. Class 40 (7). A wide - band aerial comprises inner and outer conductors, the outer being formed in a number of turns around the inner conductor. In one embodiment the aerial comprises an upper and a lower section, the sections being mirror images, Fig. 1. The inner conductors 22, 24 are wound as a helix of triangular cross-section, Fig. 2, and are of mesh. The outer conductors 26, 28 are wound as a helix of circular cross-section spaced radially from the inner conductor by insulators 52. The spacing between the inner and outer conductors varies cyclically and at the minima there is capacitive loading of the aerial. A coaxial feeder carrying a signal is connected to the inner and outer conductors at terminals 30, 31. A second signal to be diplexed with the first signal is fed in at both the top and bottom of the aerial. The aerial radiates omnidirectionally, and several aerials may be stacked to form an array. The crosssection of the outer helix may be elliptical or polygonal, for example square, Fig. 3 (not shown), and may be loaded by stubs. The inner conductor may be formed of sheet instead of mesh metal.
