Abstract

832,110. Hose &c. reels. FORGE CRAFT Ltd. Sept. 26, 1958 [Sept. 27, 1957], No. 30369/57. Class 99(2). A drum for winding material, e.g. cables or hoses, thereon comprises parallel, metal side members 11 secured by tie-rods 16, the inner surfaces of the members 11 being formed with corresponding annular grooves 21 disposed radially outwardly of the tie-rods 16 for the reception of opposite ends of wooden battens 22 which form a core of the drum. As shown, each member 11 includes a hub 12 and a peripheral tubular element 13 with spokes 14 secured there-between, an annular metal sheet 15 on one side of the member 11 being welded to the hub 12 and element 13. Alternatively a metal sheet may be provided on each side of the member 11. The battens 22 are inserted into the grooves 21 from outside the members 11 through an aperture 23 formed in a base part of one of the grooves, the dimensions of the battens being such that the final batten when inserted is disposed opposite the aperture 23 and is secured in position by a cover plate. Stops may be provided in the grooves 21 to limit the circumferential movement of the battens. A further layer of battens may be inserted in grooves adjacent the outer edges of members 11 to provide lagging, covering or retaining means for material wound on the drum.
