Abstract

1,092,716. Laminates. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. Nov. 18, 1964 [Nov. 19, 1963], No. 28653/67. Divided out of 1,092,715. Heading B5N. A laminate, comprising a thermoplastic core sandwiched between two metal sheets, is made by roughening the metal sheets to a depth between 0À1. and 3À0 mils, etching the thus roughened sheets, locating a thermoplastic sheet therebetween, and finally bonding the assembly by pressure at a temperature between 200‹ and 600‹ F. The roughening may be effected by grit blasting or by acid etching, using e.g. hydrochloric acid or ferric chloride, and the subsequent etching may be effected by a sulphochromate solution. The metal sheets may be wiped clean with a solvent such as acetone and vapour degreased by trichloroethylene before roughening and may be artificially aged by the application of stearic acid after roughening. In the latter instance the sheets are degreased before the bonding by trichloroethylene. The metal sheets may be of aluminium, stainless steel or a copper alloy and the core may be of polyethylene, polypropylene polystyrene, an ABS copolymer or a vinyl resin.
