Abstract

1,080,772. Laminates. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 7, 1964 [Oct. 31, 1963], No. 36533/64. Heading B5N. [Also in Division G1] A bimaterial thermosensitive element comprises a lamina of a thermoplastic material, e.g. bisphenol A polycarbonate, melt-bonded (without the use of adhesive or mechanical connection) to a lamina of metal, e.g. aluminium, or of another thermoplastic material of different linear expansion coefficient, the thickness of the laminµ being inversely as the square roots of the elastic moduli of the materials used. The expansivities of the two materials should preferably differ by at least 5 parts per million per ‹ C. The laminated material is preferably made by pressing the essentially thermoplastic layer into contact with the roughened and cleaned metal or other layer, heating the layers above the softening temperature of the first layer, and allowing to cool without disturbance. Examples of thermoplastic materials for the first layer, in addition to bisphenol A polycarbonate, are nylon, polyphenylene oxide polymers, particularly polyxylylene oxide, polyvinylidene chloride, h.d. polythene, polytrifluorochloroethylene, polystyrene, polyethylene terephthalate, polymethyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymers, and ethyl cellulose. Examples of metals, in addition to aluminium, are tungsten, molybdenum, steel and steel alloys and titanium. The metal layer may be replaced by a thermosetting plastics layer.
