Abstract
Purified quartz sand is produced from quartzose crude sand containing non-quartzose particles as impurities by washing particles of diameter 0.1-0.3 mm. at room temperature or above, e.g. 40-120 DEG C., at atmospheric or superatmospheric pressure with an aqueous medium of pH 7.0-11.0, preferably 9.0 to 9.5, containing a wetting agent (e.g. alkyl-benzene sulphonates or ethylene oxide addition polymers) and when necessary, a compound capable of forming complex salts with the cations present in the impurities (e.g. iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, aluminium, titanium, chromium) such as monobasic or polybasic acids having one or more hydroxyl or nitrogen-containing groups, e.g. salicylic acid, dihydroxymaleic acid, hydroxamic acids, pyrophosphoric acid, tartanic and thioglycollic acids, and the washed sand particles are subjected to an electrostatic or electromagnetic field (e.g. of strength >20 kilogauss at an air gap of 0.5-5.0 mm) to separate quartzone particles from non-quartzose. It is necessary to use such complex-forming compounds when the impurities are very firmly adhered to the particles. The ratio by weight of aqueous medium to crude sand may be \sF2:1. The washing action may be enhanced by producing pressure waves of frequency >20 kc/s., preferably >80 kc/s., and preferably of intensity >0.5 watts/sq. cm. causing implosions on the surfaces of the particles. Spark discharges of energy 500-10,000 watt-secs. may also be used. The crude sand may also be washed preliminarily with water rendered alkaline of pH 7.0-11.0, which may be repeated one or more times. Particles of diameter 0.1-0.3 mm. are obtained from natural quartzone crude sand by separating particles of diameter < 0.1 mm. and > 1.0 mm., and separating those of diameter 0.1 to 0.3 mm. from the resulting fraction by hydroclassification in the water used for the preliminary washings. The particles of diameter 0.3 mm. to 1.00 mm. may be disintegrated to give more particles of diameter 0.1 to 0.3 mm., all of which may be further graded, e.g. into fractions having particle sizes of 0.1 to 0.2 mm. and 0.2 to 0.3 mm.
