Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover Al2O3 without emitting an offensive odor during drying by preparing a suspended slurry composed of aluminum ash and water in an elutriation process, separating the slurry into a suspended slurry part and a sediment, concentrating the slurry part in the following decomposition process, and adding acid to the concd. slurry to decompose metallic Al, AlN, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Suspended slurry composed of aluminum ash and water is prepared in an elutriation process, and by allowing the slurry to stand, coarse particles of Al and Al2O3 in the ash are settled to separate the slurry into a suspended slurry part and a sediment. In the following decomposition process the supernatant of the slurry freed of the sediment is removed, and the concd. slurry is made weakly acidic by adding hydrochloric acid with stirring. Finely divided Al, AlN, etc. in the slurry are converted into AlCl3 by decomposition. This slurry is then neutralized with alkali, whereby the AlCl3 precipitates as Al(OH)3 by hydrolysis, and the Al(OH)3 is added to the Al2O3 slurry. NH3 generated by the acid treatment reacts with hydrochloric acid at once and is converted into NH4Cl, so no offensive odor is emitted.
