In a car-headlamp dipping arrangement, light from an approaching car is focused on to a cadmium sulphide resistor 4 mounted inside the headlamp by a lens 3 stuck to the headlamp glass the photo-resistor being shielded from the lamp filaments 7 by the mounting tube 3a. A transistorized amplifier Fig. 2, 4, 5 (not shown) and relay contained in a replaceable plug-in unit 40 effect switching of the lamps dim and bright filaments in response to the photo-resistor output.
