Abstract

In apparatus for measuring the hydrostatic head of a body of liquid for determining a ship's draught, or the depth, weight or volume of a liquid in a container, air under pressure is supplied to the lowest receiver 13 of a number of vertically spaced receivers 8-13, through a pipe 35, economizer 18 and tube 20. Air under pressure depresses the liquid level in receiver 13 until air bubbles through the opening 15A of the pipe 15, a pot 12 now being charged with air at a pressure which counterbalances the head of water above a datum 2 at the opening 15A of the pipe 15. The air finally escapes through pipe 16, a swan neck 17 and air-operated diaphragm valve 18 to atmosphere. A mercury thermometer is plugged by a plug 32 and socket 26, and the over-all head of water indicated on its scale. A water manometer 38 is connected to the pot 12 by a plug 33 and socket 31 which corresponds to the first scale marking below the mercury level and measures the relative hydrostatic head above the level Z in the pot 12. By adding the readings of manometers 37, 38 a measure of the ship's draught is obtained. In a modification Fig. 4 (not shown) similar apparatus is used for measuring the depth of liquid in a tank, in which case a series of receivers are located at different levels in a tank. In a further arrangement, nitrogen may be used instead of air.
