Apparatus for detecting or measuring the height or volume of liquid in a reservoir comprises an open ended tube 16, an electrically driven air pump 12 and a pressure gauge 14 connected together so that with the tube 16 open at the bottom of a reservoir air supplied to the tube by the pump will increase in pressure until the air bubbles out of the bottom of the pipe, the pressure of air being detected or measured by the gauge, characterized by the pump and gauge being housed in a common casing 10.
