Abstract
945,549. Indicating liquid levels. DOBBIE McINNES Ltd. July 27,1961 [April 29, 1960], No. 15057/60. Addition to 865, 909. Heading G1H. The level indicating apparatus described in the parent Specification is modified in that the secondary conduit extends over a fraction of the overall depth of the liquid and is open only at its lower end. In the form shown the level of oil in any of the cargo tanks of a marine tanker is indicated at a remote location by high and low sensitivity manometer gauges 14, 5 containing water and mercury respectively. The gauge 5 is connected to a standpipe 1 extending to the bottom of a tank 3 and supplied with compressed air through a pipe 9. This gauge gives a rough indication of oil level throughout the tank depth on a coarse scale 6. The gauge 14 is connected to an open-ended standpipe 12 which extends into and terminates a short distance from the top of the tank and is supplied with compressed air through a pipe 17. The graduated fine scale 19 of the gauge 14 represents only the critical upper zone of the overall head and very fine readings of tank ullage when filling are provided. A blind 22 is adjusted on a specific gravity scale to prevent the operator from referring to the mercury column after the oil rising in the tank has reached the standpipe 12.
