Abstract
An apparatus for boiling sugar syrup to produce massecuite comprises a series of interconnected units, each unit comprising a heater and means for separating the vapour phase from the boiling material, and means for introducing gas bubbles into at least some of the units. As shown, the units comprise a main column 1' - 1n and a return column 7' - 7n connected at their ends by bends <PICT:1090273/C6-C7/1> 6' - 6n and 8' - 8n, heater 3' - 3n and means 15" - 15n for introducing the gas bubbles e.g. air saturated with steam, into the units. The heaters comprise a plurality of tubes 3' - 3n connected to perforated plates 4' - 4n, and through which flow heating fluid. The units may comprise means 5 for dispersing the upward flow of material, which means may be in the form of connected concentric tubes, plates or corrugated sheets. Means (not shown) may be provided for introducing crystals into the first unit to initiate crystal growth. The bends 6' - 6n may be made of a plurality of sections. The return columns may be inside the main columns. The syrup is supplied to the first unit 7' by inlet 9' and subsequent units are supplied with massecuite from the preceding unit by conduits 9" - 9n and with fresh syrup by inlets 10". The gaseous phase is separated from the boiling material through nozzle 11' - 11n. The massecuite may be removed from the units at outlets 13' - 13n.
