In a web-winding machine, an adjustable curved web-flattening member, such as a roller 14, Fig. 2, or a bar 28, Fig. 3 (not shown), has one or both ends mounted for movement parallel to the direction of travel of the web, so that the chord of the line of contact of the member with the web may be adjusted to a position at right-angles to, or somewhat inclined to, a plane passing through the centre of the web at right-angles to the web surface. In Fig. 2, the roller 14 has its end bearings mounted in arms 18 pivoted at 31. The position of each arm 18 can then be varied by a mechanical spring arrangement 20 or by an hydraulic servo device. A damper device 21 prevents oscillations and rebounds of the roller 14.
