A web guide assembly for controlling the lateral position of a travelling web 18 comprises an actuating device, a pair of controls 115, each control 115 being responsive to the lateral position of the web for effecting the movement of the actuating device to position the web in a respective first or second position, spaced from one another, and a control device 83 for alternately connecting the controls to the actuating device. The web may be the wire of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine. The actuating device comprises a fluid actuated motor 50, the piston rod of which is connected to a carriage 30 supported by swinging linkages (Fig. 2 not shown) and supporting journal 23 of roll 16 so that the sideway position of one end of roll 16, and thus the movement of the lateral position of the web, are controlled by the fluid pressure in motor 15. Valve 72, controlled by timer 83, causes fluid to be fed to motor 15 alternately through pipe 63 and pipe 64. Controls or palms 115 which are spring pressed against web 18 vary the amount of fluid leaked by valves 60 or 61 from pipes 63 or 64, the amount depending on the position of the web relative to the respective first or second position so as to cause the actuating mechanism to move the web into the first or second position. In a modification the two valves 60, 61 are actuated by two cams mounted on a shaft in angular offset relation, with one palm being mounted on the shaft and being spring pressed against the web.
