Abstract

A tensioning roller 1 for a running web 3 is rotatably mounted on a fixed shaft 2 so as to be capable of movement under the action of a spring relatively to the shaft 2 in a direction towards and away from the web. As shown in Fig. 1, the roller 1 is mounted by means of ballbearings 4 on a core 5 slotted at 6 to slidably engage the shaft 2. A spring 7 between the core and shaft tends to move the roller 1 away from the web 1, the strength of the spring being such so that it balances the weight of the roller and core when the shaft 2 is positioned midway between the ends of the slot 6. The spring 7 may, however, be situated at the opposite side of the shaft to that shown in which case it tends to move the roller 1 towards the web 3. This arrangement may be employed if the web exerts a horizontal force on the roller 1. If however, the web force is vertical as shown in Fig. 1, an adjustable electromagnet 8, Fig. 2 (not shown) is provided acting on the roller 1 and tending to move the roller upwardly against the action of the spring. As shown in Fig. 3, wherein a web 11 is slit at 13 into strips and alternate strips pass to take-up rollers 15, 16, respectively, a separate and independently spring-biased tensioning roller as described above may be provided for each strip. These rollers may be mounted on a fixed common shaft 23 situated between two rollers 12, 14 over which all the strips pass or, alternatively, may be mounted on two fixed shafts 24, 25 so as to be situated between the take-up rollers 15, 16 and auxiliary rollers 18, 20. The rollers 18, 20 may each be a single roller engaging all the strips or may comprise a separate roller for each strip. The shafts 23 . . . 25 may be carried by means whereby they can be lowered to bring the tensioning rollers into contact with the strips. In the case of shaft 23, it is mounted in arms 26 pivoted at 27 and held rigidly or resiliently in operative position.
