Abstract

[Also in Division D2] A web 7, Fig. 1, passes over and laps by 10- 30 degrees a roll 1 supported on arms 4 pivoted at 5, and if the web deviates towards one end of the roll, the greater tractional force at that end causes that end to move in the direction of web feed, swinging the corresponding arm 4 and causing the opposite end of the roll to move in the opposite direction through a linkage 9, 8, 11, 8, 10. In another form, Fig. 4, the linkage comprises hydraulic cylinders 12 and a pipe 13, the arms 4 being connected to the pistons in the cylinders. In either form, the position of equilibrium of the web can be caused to be other than central of the roll and can be varied as desired, by means of an adjustable spring acting on one of the members 8 or by adjusting the position of the linkage between one of the pairs of members 9, 8.
