Abstract
1,015,127. Coating webs. BLACK-CLAWSON CO. Sept. 6, 1962 [Sept. 6, 1961], No.34202/62. Addition to 921,494. Heading D1L. Apparatus for coating one surface of a moving web W comprises a flexible blade 15 arranged to press the web against a supporting member (preferably a roller 10) and a plurality of individual assemblies 30 arranged along the length of the blade so that localized adjustment of the contact pressure between the blade and the web may be effected. In the form shown, the coating bath 11 is formed in a member 12 mounted on a bar 13 which may be raised and lowered as described in the parent Specification. The flexible blade lies between member 12 and a holder bar 20 which is mounted on a member 21 pivotable about a shaft 22 so that an actuator 23 may shift the bar 20 out of its operative position e.g. so that blade 15 may be replaced. The blade 15 is initially aligned e.g. by the method disclosed in Specification 998,737 and is clamped in position by a pressurizable tube 27 mounted in a groove in bar 20. The blade is urged against the web W by a further pressurizable tube 29 mounted in a series of adjustable blocks 32. Each block 32 is mounted on a base 31 bolted to bar 20 and has a central slot 40 engaging a portion 41 of the base so as to be slidable normal to blade 15. A screw adjustor 44 is provided to move block 32 relative to its base 31 and so adjust the contact pressure of blade and web in its locality. A spring plate 55 and screw 56 are provided to hold block 32 in its adjusted position. The groove 39 in each block 32 is not located centrally thereof so that when the block is reversed (dotted lines Fig. 2) the tube 29 engages blade 15 closer to its end.
