PATENT OFFICE GUMMING ATTACHMENT FOR ENVELOPE MACHINES Application filed December 17, 1926. Serial No. 155,463.
This invention relates to improvements in gumming attachments for envelope machines. Envelope machines are usually provided with gumming attachments for supplying glue or gum to the envelope blank.
Heretofore, difficulty has been encountered with gumming attachments due to the fact that the glue contained in the same worked into the bearings for the roller shaft and also onto the shaft, retarding, and often preventing the operation ofthe device, as well as corroding the shaft.
It is, therefore, the primary object of the present invention to provide a gumming attachment for envelope machines which is so constructed as to prevent the leakage of glue into the roller shaft bearings.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described having plates or scrapers positioned adjacent the bearings to keep glue from entering the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gumming attachment in which the glue box is of a novel design and construction,
permitting the use of a roller of a large diameter and exterior shielded bearings, the box also being of such a shape that the level of the gum therein can at no time exceed the heightof the roller shaft bearings.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gumming attachment for envelope machines which is of very simple construction, is efficient in operation, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purposes described.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved gumming attachment for envelope machines, and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings it will appear that the numeral 8 designates a glue box which is divided transversely by a partition 9, forming compartments 10 and 11 for the reception of different types of glue or gum. The glue box is shaped as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 4L and 5 with a forward inclined wall 12.
A roller 13, of a comparatively large diameter, is mounted longitudinally with respect to the glue box and along the forward inclined wall 12 thereof, a slight clearance being provided between said wall and the surface of the roller. As shown in Fig. 3 said roller is hollow and its end portions are formed with bored portions 14. Extending axially through said roller is a shaft 15 having a drive fit with the portions 1 1 of the roller and of a reduced diameter between said portions.
The ends of the glue box are formed with bored portions 16 forming bearings for the pro ecting end portions of the shaft 15 and within said bearing portions and surrounding the shaft portions are bushings 17 Secured to the inner walls of the ends of the box are sector shaped shields 18 which are bored to receive the end portions of the shaft. Said shields are formed with medial hub portions 19 abutting against the ends of the roller and taking up the space between the roller and the bearings 16. The shields prevent any glue from the box and roller from getting into the bearings to retard the operation of the device. Also glue is prevented thereby from access to the shaft which would be corroded thereby.
A pair of plate members 20 are secured to opposite sides of the transverse partition 9 and cooperate with the same to prevent the entrance of glue from one compartment into the other. Mounted longitudinally with respect to the box and across the ends thereof and the plates 20, rearwardly of the roller,
is a bar 21 from which a plurality of yielding scrapers 22 depend. The proximity of the scrapers with respect to the surface of the roller is adjusted by means of a plurality of screws 23 threaded through said bar 21 and engaging at their lower end portions the scrapers. Said scrapers regulate the amount of glue which may be brought up on the surface of the roller from the compartments.
As shown in Fig. l the glue box is mounted on a support 24 and power is transmitted from a source of supply by a belt 25 running over a pulley 26. Said pulley is mounted on a shaft 27 which carries at its inner end a miter gear 28 adapted to mesh with a larger gear 29 mounted on a shaft 30 at right angles to the shaft 27. The gear 29 meshes with a gear 31 mounted on one end portion of the roller shaft 15 whereby said shaft and the roller carried thereby are driven. The other end portion of the roller shaft is squared, as at 32, to receive a hand crank, if desired, so that upon the disengagement of the gears the roller may be manually turned.
In operation the roller is revolved within the box and the surface of the roller carries up glue therefrom, one type of glue from one compartment and another type from the other compartment for different portions of an envelope blank. A plurality of small rollers 34 revolubly mounted with respect to an arm 35 which is slidably mounted on a track 36 are reciprocated back and forth into and out of contact with the box roller 13 and pick up glue therefrom which is applied by the rollers 3st to an envelope blank.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved gumming attachment is so constructed that glue or gum can not enter or work into the bearings or other parts. Also the device is of very simple and novel construction and is well adapted for the purpose set forth.
What is claimed as the invention is:
1. A gumming attachment, comprising a glue box, bearings formed at the end portions thereof, a shaft having its end portions journaled in said bearings, a roller carried by the medial portion of said shaft, and non-rotatable shields surrounding the shaft adjacent the bearings and spaced from the ends of the roller.
2. A gumming attachment, comprising a glue box, bearings formed at the end portions thereof, a shaft having its end portions journaled in said bearings, a roller carried by the medial portion of the shaft, and shields secured to the glue box surrounding the shaft adj acent the bearings and engaging the roller shaft, but spaced from the roller ends.
3. A gumming attachment, comprising a glue box, bearings formed at the end portions thereof, a shaft having its end portions journaled in said bearings, a roller carried by the medial portion of the shaft, and nonrotatable sector shaped shield members mounted on and surrounding said shaft adj acent the bearings and closing the same, said shields having hub portions engaging the shaft ends but spaced from the ends of the roller.
4:. A gumming attachment, comprising a glue box, bearings formed at the end portions thereof, sector shaped shield members fixedly secured against the inner faces of the ends of the box adjacent the hearings to protect the same, a roller within the box, and a shaft formed with enlarged portions having a drive fit with said roller, said shaft extending through said shield members and the end portions being journaled in said bearings, said shield members engaging the enlarged portions of the shaft and being spaced from the ends of the roller.
5. In a gumming attachment for envelope machines, a partitioned glue box having an inclined front wall, bearings formed at the end portions thereof, sector shaped shield members fixedly secured against the inner faces of the ends of the box adjacent the hearings to protect the same, a roller mounted longitudinally within the box and immediately adjacent the inclined wall thereof, and a shaft carrying said roller and extended through said shield members and having its end portions j ournaled in said bearings, said shield members engaging the shaft and being spaced from the ends of the roller.
