Abstract
Process for the preparation of a sulphoxidation product, which comprises reacting a saturated non-aromatic hydrocarbon of 8 to 30 carbon atoms or a mixture of such hydrocarbons with sulphur dioxide and oxygen in the presence of a saturated non-aromatic carboxylic acid ester which is added after catalytic initiation of the reaction. The carboxylic acid ester is preferably derived from aliphatic carboxylic acids of less than 19 carbon atoms and aliphatic alcohols of less than 19 carbon atoms, and is used in amounts between 1 and 5% based on the weight of the hydrocarbon. The molar proportions of sulphur dioxide to oxygen should preferably be about 2: 1, and the reaction is preferably carried out between room temperature and 45 DEG C. Alternatively, a mixture of sulphur dioxide and air can be utilized. The catalytic initiation comprises exposing the reaction mixture to high-energy radiation or ultra-violet rays, or by adding ozone or a peroxide compound to the mixture.
