Abstract
1495297 Perfluorohydrocarbons and derivatives by irradiation of polymers AKADEMIE DER WISSENSCHAFTEN DER DDR 10 Dec 1974 53329/74 Heading C2C Perfluorohydrocarbons of chain length up to 30 C atoms or substituted derivatives thereof or corresponding perfluorocarboxylic acids are produced by irradiation of solid perfluorinated hydrocarbon polymers with electron beams, the intermediately formed fission products are optionally reacted with a reactant and the desired products are immediately removed from the irradiation zone. The irradiated material is preferably PTFE and substances which are reactive under the selected radiation conditions may also be passed in. The desired products are preferably removed by a current of carrier gas, which may itself become active during irradiation, e.g. O 2 or a mixture of O 2 /inert gas. The products obtained may be deactivated and retreated with electron beams or fractionated and reacted with an amine, alcohol, phenol, carboxylic acid. Sulphonic acid hydrogen halide, vinyl compound or ammonia. Amongst the examples PTFE is irradiated in a current of N 2 to give n-perfluoroparaffins and perfluoroolefins; PTFE is irradiated in a current of air to yield COF 2 and n-perfluorocarboxylic acid fluorides which are hydrolysed by atmospheric moisture to the corresponding perfluorocarboxylic acids. The carrier gases exemplified include NO and SOCl 2 .
