Abstract
1412701 Carboxylic acids and esters A SAUS 2 May 1973 [5 May 1972] 20736/73 Heading C2C Carboxylic acids or esters are prepared from a reaction mixture of aliphatic or cyclic olefines, acetylene, water or other hydrogen donor, and carbon monoxide in the presence of a metal carbonyl catalyst or of metal salts from which a metal carbonyl is formed, in which the reaction is irradiated by gamma rays at a pressure of 75 to 250 atmospheres and at a temperature of up to 100‹ C. The preferred dosage is 10<SP>2</SP> to 10<SP>8</SP> rad and phosphines, e.g. triphenyl phosphine, or amines may be used as accelerators or pyridine may be used as a retardant. Examples describe the reaction of n-octane-(1), carbon monoxide and methanol in the presence of dicobalt carbonyl and with an irradiation dose of 3.10‹ rad of gamma rays from cobalt 60.
