Abstract
An acid tin electro-plating bath contains, in addition to a tin salt such as stannous sulphate, an aromatic amine in which two benzene nucleii are linked to each other through an alkylene, imino, carbonyl or sulphonyl group or through an oxygen or sulphur atom and there is at least one primary amino group as a nuclear substituent. Typically the bath concentration of the amine is from 0.02 to 0.04 gram mol per litre and the amine may contain as nuclear substituents fluorine, chlorine, or bromine or alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy groups. The bath may also contain phenol sulphonic acid and may be used at 35 to 60 DEG C. with a current density of 50 to 250 amps/sq.ft. In an example a cylindrical steel is rotatably supported in a cylindrical cell between a pair of spaced discs on a spindle disposed on the cell axis, six tin anodes being symmetrically arranged inside the cell walls and baffles being provided to prevent rotation of the electrolyte. The tin-coated steel is subsequently dipped in phenol sulphonic acid, dried, and flow brightened by passing a heating current through it followed, immediately the tin starts to melt, by quenching in phenol sulphonic acid.
