Abstract

1368748 Electro-depositing chromium metal or alloy BRITISH NON-FERROUS METAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION 8 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 4484/71 Heading C7B Chromium is electro-deposited from a solution of trivalent chromium, ammonium and halide ions, e.g. added as CrCl 3 and NH 4 Cl, in a Ni-free homogeneous liquid mixture of water and a dipolar organic compound containing a highly electronegative oxygen atom (i.e. activated by an adjacent electron-donating atom or group) e.g. dimethylformamide, the proportion by volume of water to dipolar organic compound being greater than 60:40 but not greater than 95:5. Preferably the halide ion concentration is increased to more than 5 molar e.g. by adding CaCl 2 , AlCl 3 or NaCl. The solution may also contain boric acid and one or more brighteners, such as aliphatic or aromatic (substituted) aldehyde e.g. salicylaldehyde, or levellers, such as coumarin or aliphatic alcohol e.g. ethanol. A cationic surfactant may also be added as in Specification 1368749. The anode may be of graphite with the solution agitated in its vicinity by air or mechanical means. Another metal may be incorporated in the solution to obtain a bi-metal co-deposit or alloy. Specifications 1368747 and 1213556 are referred to.
