Abstract

Compounds of the formula <FORM:1089020/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, phenyl, halomethyl and hydroxy-methyl groups may be obtained in aqueous solution by the reaction of formaldehyde with a hydroxyalkyl carbamate in aqueous alkaline solution. In an example a compound of the above type is prepared wherein R and R1 are both hydrogen.ALSO:Cellulosic fabrics, e.g. cotton and viscose rayon, are creaseproofed by treating them with an aqueous solution containing 5 - 20% by weight of a hydroxyalkyl N,N-dimethylol carbamate having the formula:- <FORM:1089020/D1-D2/1> in which R and R1 are hydrogen or methyl, ethyl, phenyl, halomethyl or hydroxymethyl groups prepared by the reaction of 2-3 mols of formaldehyde with 1 mol of a hydroxyalkylcarbamate in an aqueous alkaline medium, and 0.5 - 8% by weight of an acidic catalyst, e.g. zinc or magnesium chloride or nitrate, hydrochloric acid or an amine salt of a strong mineral acid, drying them, e.g. at a temperature below 110 DEG C., and then curing them by heating to a temperature of 130 DEG - 200 DEG C, preferably for 3-5 minutes. Specified hydroxyalkyl N,N-dimethylol carbamates are hydroxyethyl N,N-dimethylol carbamate, hydroxypropyl N,N-dimethylol carbamate, hydroxybutyl N,N-dimethylol carbamate, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl N,N-dimethylol carbamate and 2,3-dihydroxypropyl N,N-dimethylol carbamate. After drying the fabrics may be cut and sewn into garments, pressed into pleats or folds and then cured.
