Abstract

1,087,974. Viscosimeters. CONTINENTAL AVIATION & ENGINEERING CORPORATION. Nov.10, 1964, No.45766/64. Heading G1S. [Also in Division F1] A device measuring the viscosity of a fuel is used to determine the position of a maximum delivery stop of a fuel injection pump of an I. C. engine. Fuel entering at 112 is reduced to constant pressure by a spring-loaded valve 121 and fed through passage 114 and a narrow passage 130 to a chamber 131 from which it flows through an adjustable restriction 135 to pipe 126 leading back to the fuel tank. The flow through passage 130, and hence the pressure in chamber 131, varies in accordance with the fuel viscosity and a pressure responsive device 136 actuates a wedge 139 to adjust the maximum delivery stop of the fuel injection pump, through linkage 140, to obtain constant maximum engine output regardless of the fuel used. The effect of temperature change on the fuel viscosity is compensated for by making the part 116 of a material of relatively high thermal expansion, e.g. zinc, and the surrounding body 113 of low expansion material e. g. cast iron. In Fig.9 (not shown) escape of fuel along the rod (248) is prevented by supplying lubricating oil under pressure to chamber 416.
