A torsional vibration damper for internal combustion engines comprises a slipping flywheel 1 surrounded by a viscous friction medium. If the flywheel is mounted for slip relative to the outer wall of the casing then the flywheel is provided on its outer periphery with a plurality of equi-spaced flats, the angle between a tangent to the surface of the flywheel adjacent a flat and the flat being not greater than 8 degrees. If, however, the flywheel is mounted for slip relative to the inner wall of the casing then the inner wall is provided with flats and also grooves in the flats disposed parallel to the axis of the casing, the grooves acting as reservoirs for the friction medium (Fig. 4, not shown). The flywheel may also be provided with running ring segments 4, the radially projecting edges of which are chamfered. The slipping flywheel may be of cast iron with nodular graphite therein.
