Abstract

A method for modifying the mechanical properties of wood in the preparation of a billet of wood, or portion thereof, for bending comprises a combination of a hot softening treatment and a compression longitudinally along the grain while supported peripherally by a wall of which every element remains substantially at rest in relation to the adjacent wood surface throughout the compression. The billet 11, Fig. 1, after subjection to heat and moisture is placed inside the coiled spring 12 of a jig, the spring being supported on a base 15 having uprights 16 which are threaded at their upper ends and carry an upper plate. The free length of the spring is the same or a little greater than that of the billet and both are compressed between a ram 13 and platen. The billet may be released as soonas compression is completed or maintained compressed for a predetermined time by tightening nuts 19 against the upper plate 18. In an alternative jig more suitable for billets having crosssections which are other than circular, the billet 21, Fig. 2, is disposed in apertures having a shape corresponding to the cross-section of the billet in a plurality of plates 20 which are resiliently urged apart by springs 30 and guided on columns 26 extending from a base plate 25. During longitudinal compression of the billet, the plates remain at rest in relation to the adjacent surface of the billet, the springs being compressed. The billet may be subjected to more than one compression and immediate release and flexibility may be increased by resteaming the billet while under compression. The flexibility of veneers, plywood and laminated wood may be increased by compressing the logs in jigs as described before converting to veneer. A tapered and turned back foot for a chair may be produced by softening by steaming the middle length of a billet, compressing the middle length of the billet which is then immediately released, drying to a moisture content of 15%, machining to profile, and bending between male and female jigs.
