1,087,137. Screwing up and unscrewing pipes. F.N.R.D. Ltd. Oct. 23, 1964 [Oct. 25, 1963], No. 42209/63. Heading B3N. [Also in Division E1] Power-driven apparatus for making or breaking a twist joint between parts 20, 21 comprises members 1, 2 adapted for relative rotation, devices 24 on each of the members for gripping a part of a joint, a vane or projection 12 on one of the members extending into a passage 13 in the other member, and means to supply fluid to the passage on either side of the vane or projection to rotate relatively the members and to break or make the joint. The members each have hydraulically actuated jaws 24, and the member 2 carries four vanes 12 each moving in a passage 13 in the member 1 under the influence of hydraulic fluid supplied to the passage. In an earth boring rig the parts may be rotated by power-driven spinning means after making or breaking the joint. The. rig may be fully automated and of the reciprocating lift type. The apparatus may be modified to rotate the parts as desired by arranging the jaws to open and close after suitable return motion of the members.
