Abstract
1,085,681. Exhaust silencers. GRUNZWEIG & HARTMANN A. G. Dec. 29, 1964 (Jan. 4, 1964; Aug.1, 1964], No. 52601/64. Heading F1B. An exhaust silencer for a jet propulsion engine operating at ground level comprises a vertical sound absorbing duct 1, Fig. 4, and a convexly curved deflecting plate 2 close to the bottom of the duct which functions by use of the Coanda effect. Engine exhaust gas enters duct 3 and is deflected vertically by its tendency to adhere to plate 2. Ambient air, inducted through ducts 4 which have sound suppressing louvres 4a, cools plate 2 and thereafter mixes with exhaust gas and passes through sound suppressing louvres 5a. In another embodiment the deflecting plate has an entrance section 3, Fig. 1 (not shown) of tubular form e. g. oval, round or polygonal and discharges into a vertical sound absorbing duct 1. In further embodiments a curved deflecting plate 2a Fig. 5 (not shown), has edges of larger radius of curvature than the centre portion at the same level or the deflecting plate and its side walls have air inlet perforations 2c, Fig. 8 (not shown) which are closable by a perforated sliding member 2d to reduce the suction effect. The suction effect may also be reduced by having side walls of progressively reduced height or by locally omitting the side walls. In other embodiments the exhaust gas jet draws in fresh air through adjustable flaps 7 or slides 7' Fig. 9 (not shown), or through the gaps between adjustable sections 2b Fig. 10 (not shown) of the deflecting channel.
