Abstract
108,561. Partridge & Co., A., and Bradshaw, J. H. Sept. 6, 1916. Chucks.-A disengaging-drive lathe chuck of the type having transversely oscillating jaws, has the body provided with recesses with semicylindrical bottoms to receive rollers c with eccentric gripping- surfaces d and arms e working in slots in a ring k loose on the chuck body. One side of each slot is formed by a stop q which forms an abutment for a closing spring l abutting at its other end against a stop r carried by the body. An auxiliary loose ring s has a cam slot x engaging a pin w carried by a pawl pivoted in a gap in the ring k. By retarding the ring k the pin w passes along the slot x enabling the pawl to engage the notch y and lock the chuck in its open position. To close the chuck, the ring s is momentarily retarded, releasing the pawl and allowing the springs l to return the ring k to the closed position. In a modification for small work, the auxiliary ring and the pawl are omitted and only one spring is employed.
