Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, BENGT M W. HAN- SON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Spring-Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to chucks of a kind havinga face-plate slotted to producea series of segments or sections and having an inclined periphery cooperating with a reverse incline on theinner wall of a recessed head said face-plate being drawn within the head to effect compression of the segments.
Primarily the object of the invent-ion is the provision in connection with a face-plate having resilient sections or segments of work-clamping-jaws, one for each segment, andineans whereby said aws may be ad-' justed toward and from the axis of the chuck-spindle.
Other objects of the invention are the V provision of improved details of construction, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 one form of. the improved chuck Fig. 2 is a front end view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 3, 3 of' Fig. 1., Fig. 4. is a longitudinal vertical'section of another form of the improved chuck. Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a view partially in section and in elevation of another form of-construction, and Fig.7 is a front view of Fig. 6. Referring to the drawings,-the numeral 1 designates a chuck-spindle enlarged and externally-threa'ded at 2 at its forward end to receive a head 3 having an internally-' threaded hub-4, and said head also having a recess 5. with an inclined peripheral wall 6 in its front part. V

flat and as split at 8 into a series of segments 9', and having an inclined periphery 10 and a hub also split at 12 at right-angles to and in line with the slots 8 of the face-plate.
In other words, the slots of the face-plate spring annulus face-plate are p for the reception of nuts 19, adjustable along- -rotation by a pin 26 entering a a are carried down and into the hub where they terminate adjacent to the rear end thereof, as illustrated in Fig. l. A chamber 14. is formed in the inner side of the faceplate, and in said chamber is placed a split- 16 surrounding a ring 15, said annulus serving normally by its springlike action to expand the resilient segments, .said expansion being limited by ring 15, which together with said annulus is held 1n place by pins 17. -Designated by 22 is a pull-rod or jawactuating member having a'n'inclined head 23, which fits within thetubular'hub and bears against the inclined inner wall of the same, the stem of said pull-nod passing through a perforation 25 in the rear end of the hub, and the rod being prevented from recess in its head, as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1.
Designated-by 27 is a-cap having a chamber to receive the inner end of the spindle 1', said cap being slotted at 28, and perforated in its walls at both ends. 29 is fitted in the slot 28, is bifurcated at one end at 29 to receive a drive-pin 30, and is provided with a hook 31 at its opposite extremity through which an eccentric portion 32 of a bolt 32 passes, said bolt being prevented from longitudinal displacement by a screw 33 entering a groove 34. On its ends the bolt is provided with heads 35 suitable for the reception of a Wrench.
