Abstract
Packing material comprises a resilient rubber bonded textile base material provided with a rubber core and a working surface coated with a synthetic resin having dispersed within it, P.T.F.E. in finely divided form, the coating being keyed to the textile base material. In the example described, a neoprene core is passed through a rubber solution and into a braiding machine into which seven ends of two-ply 20 s counts asbestos yarns are also taken. A further 16 ends of the same yarn are braided round the composite centre and, after passing through a further rubber solution, the material is dried and then formed by rollers into the desired trapezoidal cross-section. The braided material is then cured, cut into lengths and sprayed with the suspension of finely divided P.T.F.E. in a synthetic resin. The braiding material if desired, may be cotton, other textiles or a blend with asbestos.ALSO:Packing material or articles such as rings for packing a crankshaft of an I.C. engine comprises a resilient rubber bonded textile base material provided with a rubber core and a working surface coated with a synthetic resin having uniformly dispersed within it P.T.F.E. in finely divided form, the coating being keyed to the textile base material. The rings may be made of a neoprene core which is passed through a rubber solution and into a braiding machine for application of asbestos or cotton yarn. After passing through a further rubber solution, it is dried and then formed by rollers into the desired trapezoidal cross-section. The braided material is then wound on to a mandrel, cured and then cut diametrically so as to produce a number of semi-circular packings which are placed in a trough and sprayed with the suspension of finely divided P.T.F.E. in a synthetic resin which may be a phenolformaldehyde resin or a cellulose ester resin.
