Abstract

The invention comprises 5,6-dihydro-6-oxomorphanthridines of the formula <FORM:1085101/C2/1> wherein R represents a straight or branched chain C2- 4 alkylene group, R1 and R3, which may be the same or different, represent hydrogen atoms or C1- 3 alkyl groups, and one of R3 represents a hydrogen atom and the other R3 represents a halogen atom; and acid addition salts thereof. The compounds are prepared by (a) reacting a compound of the formula X-H, if desired after prior, or during simultaneous, action of a condensing agent, with a reactive ester of a compound of the formula Y-R-OH, in which formulae one of X and Y represents a 5,6 - dihydro - 6 - oxomorphanthridinyl residue having a halogen atom as a substituent of one of the benzene nuclei and the other represents the boric group of the formula <FORM:1085101/C2/2> or (b) cyclizing, e.g. by heating, a compound of the formula <FORM:1085101/C2/3> wherein R4 represents a hydrogen atom or an acyl group and R5 represents a hydrogen atom or a C1- 3 alkyl group, or (c) alkylating a primary or secondary amine of the formula <FORM:1085101/C2/4> Pharmaceutical compositions having anti-histaminic activity, for oral, parenteral or topical administration, comprise a compound of the invention together with a physiologically acceptable carrier.
