In an opposed piston engine the inner piston 11 controlling the inlet ports is connected to one crank-throw 16 by connecting rod 18 and the outer piston 12 controlling exhaust ports 31 is connected by a beam 20, side rods 24, crosshead 25 and connecting rod 26 to a second throw 27. The beam 20 is guided by a slipper 21 in a guide 22 and the crosshead 25 is guided by a slipper 33 on a guide 32.
