A variable-speed friction gear comprises a barrel-shaped idler roller 50 bearing against opposed faces of parallel driving and driven discs 42, 43 and traversed across the discs by a screw 83 attached to a yoke 77 provided with a transverse pin 82, about which the roller 50 can pivot to vary its areas of contact as the ratio is varied and thus reduce wear. The arrangement includes axial loading springs 67 and a screw loading cap 53.
