Axial movement of a rod 12 is effected by rotation of a cylindrical member 13 which causes rotation and axial movement of a cage 21 containing rollers 24, whose axes are inclined to the axis of the cylindrical member 13, located between the rod 12 and member 13. Rotation of rod 12 is prevented by the engagement of a radial extension 15 with a fixed slotted member 14. The member 13 is rotatably mounted in bearings 16, 17 and is driven by gearing 18, 19. The rollers 24 comprise helical coil springs axially located in slots 23 by balls 25. In modifications, the rollers are tapered, Fig. 5, or segmented, Fig. 6.
