Abstract

<PICT:1083854/C6-C7/1> A strip 5 is degreased by feeding it through a container 1 having a solvent, e.g. trichlorethylene or tetrachlorethylene, the vapour of which is heavier than air and providing wipers 14 of horsehair or nylon bristles or leather or plastics strips in the zone where the strip leaves the vapour and enters the air. The solvent is boiled by heating elements 4, the vapour rising in a zone 3 defined by walls 10, the upper edge of which form an overflow, and the vapour is condensed by cooling tubes 11 and is recirculated by being sprayed on to the strip at 15. Suction boxes 9 prevent escape of solvent vapour.
