Abstract

1,083,655. Folding bicycles. D. E. NEWLAND. Aug. 15, 1966 [Aug. 17, 1965], No. 35305/65. Heading B7E. A folding bicycle includes a frame comprising a first member 1 extending between the handlebars and the front wheel, a second member 2 pivoted to the first member at 7 and extending to the back wheel, and a third member 3 intersecting member 2 and extending between the front wheel and the saddle, the third member being pivoted to member 2 at 8 and detachably joined to member 1 at 15 by a hook and spigot arrangement. Springing is provided by mounted pivot 8 in a rubber bush, and dividing the steering column and arranging a compression coil between the two parts. In its folded position, Fig. 2 (not shown), the wheels and saddle are brought into close proximity and the bicycle may then be used as a hand-truck or wheelbarrow. Drive may be to either the front or back wheel. In Fig. 3 (not shown) members 1 and 3 are pivoted at 15 and member 3 is retained in a bifurcated upper portion of member 2. In alternative arrangements the members may be of framework or synthetic materials construction. In the embodiment of Fig. 6a, the members 2 and 3 are attached to extensions 1a and 1b of member 1, and a pin 34 of member 3 may be releasably secured in a slot 33 of extension 1b by a spring-loaded bolt. The pedal crank mount may coincide with the pivot between members 2 and 3. Folding handle-bars, Fig. 8, comprise tubes 42, 43 rotatably mounted in support tubes 44 which are substantially horizontal and converge forwardly. A clamp 45 locks the bars in the operative position but it can be disengaged and the tubes 42, 43 folded to engage clips 37, Fig. 6a.
