Abstract

Rotary furnaces; charging and discharging.- Material to be dried is fed through a hopper 27 into a rotating cylinder 1 and after passing through the cylinder is discharged by a transverse conveyer 9, the hot gases from a fireplace 15 being drawn through the cylinder by a fan 31. The hot gases pass through a pipe 17 projecting a considerable distance into the cylinder and open only at the end. Hot air from the chamber 21 also passes into the cylinder through a flue 25 and is admitted outside the pipe 17. The cylinder is divided into five sections. The first section carries a series of helical blades 33 which deliver the material into the various compartments of the second section. As shown in Fig. 2 there are four compartments formed by radial divisions 35. The material is delivered from the compartments to the third section of the cylinder which is provided with lifting plates 38 arranged in staggered relation and then passes to helical blocks 40 disposed in the fourth section. These blades are arranged to prevent the material falling directly in front of the pipe 17 in order to prevent scorching. The fifth section is fitted with lifting plates 41 which deliver the material to a stationary hood 19 in the lower part of which works the discharge conveyer 9. The pipe 19 rotates with the cylinder 1, but communicates with a stationary flue pipe 18. The cylinder 1 turns on rollers 3 and is driven by gearing 6, 7.
