Abstract
185,823. Buxton, J., and Buxton, S. June 9, 1921. Continuous and automatic discharge apparatus, rotary.-A rotary multiple drying-apparatus comprising an outer cylinder in which are arranged a number of longitudinal drying compartments and air heating compartments heated by a heating medium introduced into the spaces between such compartments, is provided with a conicocylindrical shoot fixed concentrically to the end of the outer cylinder for feeding the material to be dried into the drying-compartments. As shown, the apparatus comprises a steam-heated rotary cylinder 1, Figs. 1 and 4, the ends of which project into stationary air-boxes 7, 8 and within which is secured the drying and air-heating cylinders 2, 3 respectively. The material is fed into the drying-cylinders by a screw conveyer 32 through a shoot 34 having projections into the drying-cylinders and which is secured to the outer cylinder, and is agitated and conveyed to the discharge screw 35 by rotary stirrers 21 coacting with grids 20, and adjustably inclined plates 18 pivoted to the drying-cylinders. The stirrer shafts are driven through gear-wheels 23 from a gear-wheel 24 carried by the outer cylinder; the gear-wheel 24 may be formed with internal teeth so that the stirrers are rotated in a direction opposite to that of the cylinder. Steam is supplied to the cylinder through the pipe 10, and the air for drying the material is drawn by a fan 45 through the adjustable inlets 26, air-heating cylinders 3, air-box 7, and drying- cylinders 2 and discharged through the chimney 46. Figs 3 and 6 show a modification in which the cylinder is heated by a furnace 40 arranged within a fixed cylinder 37, the air for drying the material being drawn by the fan 45 through the tubes 42 and drying compartments 2 and discharged through the pipe 47 to the chimney 41.
