Abstract
Coating compositions are made by mixing hexamethoxymethyl-melamine with a solution, in a solution of a base, of a copolymer made by copolymerizing an acrylic or methacrylic ester, an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a further monomer different therefrom in an amount of up to 50% of the total monomers in the presence of an aqueous solution or dispersion of an alkali-soluble copolymer of an acrylic or methacrylic ester. Monomers specified for copolymerization with the ester and acid are styrene and its derivatives, vinyl acetate, butadiene, isoprene, hydroxyethyl acrylate, ethoxyethyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, methylol acrylamide and acrylonitrile. The examples describe making coating compositions by the aqueous emulsion copolymerization of methyl acrylate, styrene and methacrylic acid in the presence of sodium lauryl sulphate, a mercaptan and sodium and potassium persulphates, with gradual addition of monomers as the reaction proceeds, followed by the copolymerization in the resulting copolymer dispersion of differently proportioned mixtures of the same monomers. The copolymers are then dissolved in ammonia and titanium dioxide and hexamethoxymethyl melamine are added thereto. The compositions are applied to metal surfaces and then stoved.ALSO:Mild steel panels and chromated aluminium foil are coated by applying thereto a mixture of hexamethoxymethyl melamine and a basic solution of a copolymer prepared by copolymerising an acrylic or methacrylic ester, an unsaturated carboxylic acid and another monomer in an aqueous solution or dispersion of an alkali-soluble copolymer of an acrylic or methacrylic ester (see Division C3). The Examples describe the use in coating of ammonia-solutions of copolymer mixtures derived from methyl acrylate, stepene and methacrylic acids, the solutions containing titanium dioxide and hexamethoxymethyl melamine. After application to the metal surfaces, the compositions are stored.
