Abstract

1297222 Acrylonitrile/unsaturated sulphonate copolymers RHONE-POULENC SA 19 April 1971 [30 Jan 1970] 20593/71 Heading C3P Acrylonitrile is copolymerized with an ethylenically unsaturated sulphonic acid or alkali metal salt thereof in a 5-40% by weight aqueous solution of an inorganic salt of ammonia or of a metal of Group Ia or IIa of the Periodic Table (as in Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 45th edition, B-2). Exemplified sulphonic monomers are sodium (meth)allylsulphonate, sodium vinylsulphonate and potassium vinyloxybenzenesulphonate. A third monomer may also be copolymerized, e.g. a vinyl ester such as vinyl acetate, an acrylic or methacrylic ester such as methyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride. The inorganic salt may be a halide, nitrate or sulphate, e.g. sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, ferrous ammonium sulphate or sodium sulphate. In examples copolymerization is effected at pH 2À5 using potassium chlorate/sodium bisulphite or potassium persulphate/potassium bisulphite catalyst. The copolymer products are useful for forming fibres having good affinity for basic dyestuffs, and in various fields where products having ionic character are required.
