Abstract

1,267,905. Vinylidene chloride copolymer coating. A. E. STALEY MFG. CO. 15 April, 1970 [28 April, 1969], No. 17954/70. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C3] A coating composition comprises a latex of a copolymer of (a) 70-95% vinylidene chloride (b) 0.1-3% of a sulpho-alkyl ester of an ethylenically unsaturated acid and having 6- valent sulphur, (c) 0.2-5% of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and (d) 2- 29.9% of an ethylenically unsaturated non- acidic monomer other than (a), (b) or (c) and free from acidic groups. The latex is obtained by emulsion polymerisation. Examples describe the preparation of copolymers of vinylidene chloride, methyl acrylate, and sodio 2- sulphoethyl methacrylate with acrylic acid or with methacrylic acid and 1, 3-butylene dimethacrylate in emulsion using a seed latex and using the products to coat corona discharge treated polypropylene, unprimed polyethylene and aluminium foil.
