In order to enable the weight, normally exerted by a bed occupant on member 2, to counterpoise itself about its fulcrum the fulcrum lies in a line of rolling contact of the member 2 with the inclined curved surface of block 4. The bed moves from the lying to the reclined position, or in reverse, under the control of a brake mechanism, in which arm 18 is jammed in a tilted slot 26 in lever 25. The slot is untilted, to release arm 18, by centring lever 25 by means of lever 23. Flexible member 5, which holds member 2 against sliding, during the rolling motion, may be replaced by a pivoted link (8).
