<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Bed with swiveling backrest and adjustable position during use There are several constructions of bunk *, normal bedroom beds and hospital beds (clinic), the surface of which is divided transversely, with respect to the shape of the human body, in a lower main part (seat) and in a part intended for the back (backrest) raised between them by hinge and in which the backrest can be changed from
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
position by the user himself, lying down, by displacement of weight, by the fact of a reciprocal transmission of pressure from the seat to the backrest and vice versa.
These constructions have not found their current use, or their popularization is very limited, because they lacked an essential element, in other words an important fact was not taken into account: Such a device can only have a pleasant use if the backrest can be maneuvered with the same ease in the whole extent of its movement: upwards forwards, as well as from behind when descending.
What is opposed to this ease of maneuvering is that if the user is more lying down than seated, the pressure exerted on the lower wichipal part is relatively less, that exerted on the backrest relatively stronger. On the other hand, in the seated position, the pressure exerted on the seat is relatively strong, that exerted on the backrest relatively weak.
In view of this fact, the present invention improves a known kind in several types of adjustable beds or beds, in which the backrest, connects to the seat by hinge, movable on a horizontal axis thanks to pivots placed at a certain distance from the hinge. , is suspended in a fixed mount.
The balance-type suspension of this construction allows, by a corresponding choice of the distance of the axis of suspension of the backrest to the hinge between seat and backrest, the backrest being moderately inclined, to establish a balance between the pressure of the user on the seat and the pressure that his upper body exerts on the part of the backrest located above the suspension axis.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
However, by the change in the pressure conditions * mentioned, the backrest, in a seated position, will push the user's upper body forward strongly, while in the lying position the backrest falls down and the upward of the user's body is no longer supported.
In Figures 1 to 10 is shown a new construction which eliminates these drawbacks: Figure 1 shows the side view of a bed with shared surface and the new device, er lying position, the lateral part of the bed being deleted in the figure .
Figure 2 shows the same bed, in a seated position.
Figure 3 shows in large the device producing the equilibrium, in which a flexible band prevents sliding against each other of the surfaces acting in common, in the supine position.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
In the new construction, the backrest 2 (fig. 1 to 4) does not pivot around a fixed fulcrum, but the lower surface of the backrest frame rests on a 4 or 4 'bomb support connected to the frame of the backrest. bed 3, facing forward going down.
Means are provided to avoid Ut. sliding of the backrest 2 on the curved support 4 or 4 'and only allow a change of position. Of all the different possible means, the simplest are as follows: A flexible band 6 (fig. 3 and 4) is interposed between the lower part of the backrest frame 2 and the curved support 4.
One of the res ends 6 is attached to the upper end of the domed support 4, while its lower extract 7 is attached to the lower surface of the backrest frame 2.
One of the branches 9 (fig. 5 and 6) of a U-shaped metal bracket 8 of corresponding width is admitted, being able to pivot, at the upper end of the curved support, while the other branch 10 is attached. , being able to swivel, to the lower surface of the backrest frame.
The action of this construction is based on the fact that the center of rotation of the backrest, that is to say its point of contact 11 - 11 'with the curved support is moved towards the hinge 12 when the backrest is tilted upwards, in the reverse direction when tilting down.
In the backrest 2, acting during the movement as a double lever, the lower part (lever arm) is thus shortened, the upper part (lever arm) extended, when tilting upwards; vice versa when tipping down. In the seated position, the pressure of the user on the seat 1, increased, therefore acts by the hinge 12 on a shortened lever arm, the reduced pressure of the upper body on a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
extended lever arm. In the supine position, the reduced pressure of the user on the seat 1 acts by the hinge 12 on an extended lever arm, and the increased pressure of the upper body on the shortened lever arm.
During construction, the shape of the curved support 4 or 4 'can be determined empirically, so that an exact equilibrium exists between the indicated pressures acting in opposite directions throughout the range of movement. Once the 4 'or 4' hanger is determined exactly, differences in the proportions of the user's body can only produce a minimal shift in the state of equilibrium, which does not affect ease of use. . A very heavy person and a child of insignificant weight can, in all positions, move the backrest up or down with equal ease.
The support hanger 4 '(figs. 5 and 6) can be further varied by the fact that the lower support surface 13 of the backrest is placed lower in relation to the hinge 12. To obtain the state of equilibrium for all places, the 4 'support hanger must be longer. It is thus obtained that the foot 14 of the "seat" part 1 of the bed makes almost no longitudinal movement when the backrest is tilted.
In any case, two additional conditions are absolutely necessary so that the comfort obtained by the new construction is not compromised or reduced: The surface of the bed 1 and 2, usually provided with an elastic mesh, on which the padding is placed , must not present any longitudinal tension exceeding the place of the fold, and the backrest 2 must, in each place, be able to be blocked by a brake. This brake cannot satisfy what is required of it to
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
the present day only if it blocks completely smoothly, without the use of toothed stops, and if it can be actuated without effort.
Aside from clinic beds, in which the bed surface is most often provided with solid ribbon springs stretched transversely, with a metal frame of corresponding strength, the bottoms of normal beds usually have a truss suspension. This suspension is highly elastic by the vertical action of spiral springs 15 (wire 7) placed on the frame and which are distributed uniformly over the surface and it exerts an equal traction in both directions on the frame which surrounds it. If the part of the mattress supporting the back were articulated, the longitudinal traction would interfere with the smooth course of the movement and the elastic mesh would give the end of the fold a rounded rather than an exact fold.
As it is not possible to use transverse bars fixed at the height of the screen surface at the location of the fold, the present construction comprises only one or more ribbon springs, tensioned transversely at the rear end of the seat surface. and at the lower end of the backrest part, which form a solid limit for the grilling of the two surfaces, the frame not having to undergo too much fatigue. Lying down, however, the user is absolutely not bothered by these ribbon springs.
In order to be able to lock the backrest 2 (fig. 1, fig. 2, fig. 8) smoothly at each desired inclination, a curved piece of round or trapezoidal section is suspended (pendulum suspension) from its lower part, either on the side under the frame or in the middle to a cross member 17.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
This curved piece 18 slides. when moving the backrest 2, through a trapezoidal recess 19 of a plate 20 fixed to the bed frame 3 and vertical relative to the bent part 18. An eccentric 21, also fixed to the bed frame, so as to be able to rotate , pushes, under the action of a tension spring 22, the bent part 18 in the trapezoidal recess 19 which prevents any movement of the backrest 2. The movement becomes possible again when a rod 24, actuated by a hand lever 23, remove the eccentric from its position.
For blocking the bent part, it is also possible to use an already known device, in which the bent part 18 slides through a persage 28 of a flat iron 25, a little larger than the section of the bent part 18. In the traditional type, the end 27 with flat bar (tilting tab) 25 is hingedly connected to the frame of the bed 3 or to a cross member 28 which is fixed thereto, and the bar 25, the bore 26 of which at each point of contact in position normal has the same direction as the bent part 18, is articulated by a spring such that the opposite edges 31 of the bore 26 strongly adhere to the bent part 18.
If the backrest 2 is oriented in such a way that the bent part tries to swing the tab 25 in the same direction as the spring already does, a strong blocking effect of the edges 31 of the bore on the bent part occurs which, the pressure increasing in the direction mentioned, also becomes more powerful and always makes movement impossible.
In any event, this arrangement only produces a blockage in one direction, while for an opposite movement the friction of the bent part at the edges of the bore 31 has a loosening effect and the movement is not hampered. To obtain a locking in both directions is placed in articulation with the tilting tab 25 already designated a bracket 29, vertical with respect to the tab and parallel to the bent part.
The ends of the bracket 29 surround the bent part 18 by tightening slightly. If the backrest 2, and with it the bent part, tends to move, the yoke 29 above, as a result of the clamping effect of its ends 30 and 30 'and with it the tilting tab 25, is driven in the direction of movement considered: The edges 31 of the bore 26 press the bent part 18 which, on the other hand, tries to rotate
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
the tilting tab is still softer and the pressure increases so that movement is impossible.
For the reversal of the movement, the same facts act after a slight pivoting of the tilting tab 25 in the other direction.
To release the brake and once again allow movement, the branches 34 of a fork 32 pivoting on its axis 33 placed vertically with respect to the lorgitudinal direction of the bed, take the tilting tab 25 aside. In its normal position, it leaves enough space for the tilting leg to pivot.
If the user, by means of a transmission orie link 36, twists it sufficiently so that these branches 34 are posed on both sides of the tilting tab 25 and hold it in the intermediate position, the bent part 18 can slide freely through the drilling 26 in the same direction; the blocking effect is canceled and the movement of the backrest 2 released.
In this arrangement can not be avoided a slight play in the braking effect during the pressure reversal of the backrest.
To eliminate it is also provided another arrangement (fig. 9) with the same arched part 18, placed at the lower part of the backrest. This arched part slides however, during the movement of the backrest, through the corresponding holes 26 'and 26 "of two tilting legs 25' and 25", placed close to each other, articulated at the ends of one side on a common axis. 37 By a spring 38, the ends of the other side are separated with a pressure such that the ridges 31 'and 31 "of the two bores strongly adhere to the bent part.
Each of the tilting legs completely blocks, as a result of the effect of the method described above, the movement of the bent part 18 in one of the two directions, so that the backrest 2 is absolutely fixed in both directions and that also no clearance also exists during pressure reversal.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
The release of the brake is effected in the same way only by using a tilting tab, by means of a fork 32 pivoting on its longitudinal axis 33 ', the branches of which 34', during the operation by the user press the two 25 'and 25 "tilting tabs until a perfect grip, in a vertical position with respect to the part of the bent part 18; so that the edges 31' and 31" of the holes only slightly touch the bent part 18 during sliding , without causing a blocking effect.
The necessary condition for the perfect functioning of the two braking arrangements is that the bent part 18, the point of suspension 39 of which does not describe an exact arc of a circle during the movement of the backrest, is formed in such a way that the tilting legs, in their intermediate position at all places of the arched part are green in relation to it.
