Apparatus for bending elongate members comprises a duct for housing an elongate member to be bent, said duct being provided by aligned holes in a group of plates which are arranged face-to-face in a row and can be pivotally moved relatively to one another in an accordion-like fashion so as to provide said duct with a bend and said elongate members with a corresponding bend to that of said duct. A longitudinally slotted tube to be bent is positioned so as to lie in aligned recesses 13 formed in three groups of plates 2, a rib member 15 in the form of a leaf-spring in the recesses engaging the slot of the tube. The groups of plates 2 are separated by spacers 3. Cables 4, 4<SP>1</SP>, 5, 51 pass through the plates to be secured to the outer plates. In operation, the cables 5, 5<SP>1</SP> are pulled over pulleys 7 to cause the plates 2 to pivot about balls received therebetween to a position in which the tapered faces of the plates are in contact, the tube being thereby bent. The recesses 13 may be closed and formed in divisible plates or have lateral slots for the removal of the bent tube. Instead of four pulleys 7 at the centre, two pulleys at one end over which single cables run may be provided. To form an S-shaped bend two groups of oppositely tapered plates with crossing cables may be used, Fig. 7 (not shown). Bends in more than one plane may be formed, the plates of one group having two tapers.
